Unfortunately, the time has come that being able to make your own face mask is a skill that’s needed.
But being able to sew a face mask with a sewing machine is not available for everyone. I came up with this solution of a no sew face mask using fabric and finishing it off with crochet.
This really is an easy face mask DIY. All you need is a piece of fabric and some yarn for this face mask pattern free to be made by anyone.
You can even use an old t-shirt instead of fabric to create this crochet face mask.
You can buy the ad-free printable PDF for this Crochet Face Mask Pattern on Etsy. Thank you for your support!
I also created a face mask pattern that is all done in crochet and then felted to create a wool fabric. You can view it here.
As well as a Crochet Pattern for Face Mask Buddies to save your ears if you are wearing masks a lot.
This face mask is for personal use and not meant as a medical device or to prevent disease.

Materials:
- 8″ x 14″ Fabric, you can even use some old cloth or a t-shirt
- Medium weight yarn, I would use an acrylic so it can be washed over and over
- Crochet Hook Number 4mm
- Scissors
- Pins
- Large Eye Needle or These
Crochet Terms (US):
- Ch- Chain
- Sp – Space
- St – Stitch
- SC- Single Crochet
- RS- Right Side
Explanation:
First, cut a piece of fabric 8″x 14″.
Now it is best to use your iron to really get all the edges creased so they don’t come loose easily.
All you do is fold the long sides to the middle and then fold over the sides with the raw edges twice.
Those are the sides you will add the 3 folds to and crochet along.
Using pins, hold the creases together on the top and for each fold.
The first fold should be about 1″ up from the bottom and each fold circa 1/4″ apart.
Once you have the fabric laid out and flattened with your iron, you can begin with the crochet pattern for this face mask
Pattern:
ROW 1: Ch 80
Cut the yarn with an 8′ tail to attach to the fabric mask with a blanket stitch.
Thread the yarn on a large eye needle and come through all the layers with your needle from the back side.
Then take the needle through the loop of the yarn to the back.
Just pull tight and you created your first stitch that you later use for your single crochet stitches.
Keep on taking pins out as you go all along the side of the face mask. Once you reach the end, take the needle off and continue with your crochet hook to chain 80 chains. Finish off.
Now you could stop at that but I think it looks more finished to add another row of single crochet stitches along the side.
ROW 2: make sure to start from your first chain and that everything is right side facing. Using new yarn, chain 1 into the first space, single crochet across
Treat each loop of the blanket stitched along the fabric as a space and single crochet in each space.
Repeat on other side, fasten off and weave in all ends.
Pro Tip!
This no sew face mask can quickly be made by up cycling fabric and yarn you already have at home. This crochet face mask pattern is easy enough to get the older kids involved to add the crochet part all around.
