Learn how to make easy face mask buddies or ear savers with crochet
I created these face mask buddies after I made my crochet face mask and realized that it can be uncomfortable to wear behind your ears. These crochet mask buddies take care of any discomfort and also add a little bit of fun with the bright colors and custom make marbleized buttons. Of course, you can make your own face buddies as plain as you like or just black and white. These really are great ear savers!
This pattern is really easy to work and it only takes about 10 minutes for each mask buddy. Any crochet beginner can work them even if this is your first crochet project. I even added a video of the entire process so you can crochet along with me.

Face Mask Buddies Materials:
- Medium weight acrylic yarn like Lion Brand Hartland Yarn for easy washing
- 4mm Crochet Hook
- Scissors
- Needle
- Buttons
- Sculpey to make your own buttons (optional)
- Pencil
- Oven to bake the sculpey
Crochet Terms (US):
- Ch- Chain
- Sp – Space
- St – Stitch
- SC- Single Crochet
- Sl St- Slip Stitch
Explanation:
These face mask buddies are made with joining rounds that are increased on on both sides. So they are long ovals.
I made them in 3 sizes: small, medium, large.
The small starts with 10 ch, medium 20 ch, large 30 ch.
The rest is the same for all of them. So you can choose any length by the number of chains you start with.
Then you can attach any store bought buttons or make your own fun polymer clay buttons like I did. Even when wearing a mask, I try to show personality 😉
Crochet Face Mask Buddies Pattern:
ROUND 1: Ch 11, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc across, 2sc in end ch
Now continue around to other side (do not turn your work over) 2sc across from 2sc, sc across, sl st to start
ROUND 2: ch 1, 2sc in next st, sc across, 2sc in first of the 2 sc from last round, sc in next st, sc in next st, 2sc in next st, sc across, sl st to start, fasten off leaving long tail
In this video I show you the start and how to work the pattern and make the buttons to attach.
Now all that is left is to make the buttons and add them to the face mask buddies.
You can follow the directions in the video tutorial for the buttons or this step by step tutorial on my blog right here.
Once the buttons are baked, or if you are using store bought buttons, it is time to attach them to the ends of your crochet face mask buddies.
Use the long tails left on either side of the crochet piece. Start on one side and attach the button in the corner. Do the same on the other side. Now your face mask buddies are ready to wear with your face mask
Pro Tip!
Remember, you can make them longer or shorter depending on how many chains you start with. You can measure how long you will need it before starting with the crochet chains.
