How to make a granny square crossover festival bag
Summertime is a time for festivals, concerts, beach and hanging out in the park. It is the perfect time to show off your handmade creations. This crochet Boho bag is such a statement piece and so much fun to make. Doesn’t take too long to crochet and is a great beginner/intermediate piece if you are determined. It is made of 10 small granny squares and 2 half granny squares that are connected with a few rows of double crochet. I added lining to the inside by altering a simple linen bag, but it is optional.
The long fringe is the best part of this festival bag and you will love how it sways with each step you take. You can even make it longer or shorter if you wish.

Whipstitch both sides of the bag together along the 2 bottoms and 2 sides, leaving the top open.
Adding the Fringe
1.Cut lots of 12″ strings of color 3 for the fringe for this boho bag. You can make them larger or smaller if you like.
2. Fold 1 string in half. Insert hook from bottom of bag, working through 1 loop of the panel seam and pull string up to create a loop. Thread tails of string through the loop and pull until snug. This method is called the larkshead knot. You can see how those are made in my Macrame Tutorial.
Adding the Strap
Cut 5 pieces of 60″ string of color 3. Tie them together with a knot about 2″ from the start. Then attach the strings to one side of the opening of the crochet bag so that the knot and fringe hangs off to the side.
The strap is braided with a fishtail braid. Just lay all 5 strings out next to each other. Then divide them in the center. Take the left string and place it over the next 2 strings so it rests in the center. Then take the right string and place it over the next 3 strings so it rests in the center. Keep repeating this pattern until you reach the end.
Now add a knot to the end while also leaving a 2″ tail. finally, attach it the other side just like you did on the first side.
Optional Bag Liner
1. Lay out the cotton bag and place the crochet bag on top. Cut out the same size making sure to keep the 2 edges of the bag so that only 2 sides have to be sewn together. (see photo below)
2. By hand or machine, sew the 2 sides together.
3. Fold the top of the liner over and iron.
4. Insert the liner in the bag and whip stitch in place using a needle and thread.
