Learn how to make a cozy Headband with Mosaic Crochet
Mosaic crochet is a great way to add patterns and scenery to your crochet projects. This winter wonderland headband crochet pattern is a great beginner pattern to try out your hands at mosaic crochet. It should only take a few hours to complete and will keep your head warm in the winter.
I used a Christmassy red and white color pallet, but it would be equally nice in red and greens. Then it would be a true winter landscape with the white snow coming down on green pine trees.
If you wont to try an even smaller mosaic crochet pattern, my Pine Tree Coasters Mosaic Crochet Pattern is perfect to give mosaic crochet a quick try.

Mosaic crochet is a beautiful way to create pictures with yarn. It seems intimidating for many beginners, but its not so hard once you understand the basics. Since this headband is worked in the round, there are no ends to weave in between each color change. Just pull the new color up for each round.

Winter Wonderland Headband Mosaic Crochet Pattern
Mosaic crochet has a set of rules you need to follow:
- use at least 2 colors that are clearly different and easy to differentiate
- use alternating rows/rounds of these 2 colors
- start each row on the right side (left side for left handed crocheters)
- cut the yarn at the end of each row, when working in the rounds, do not cut the yarn but bring the other color up. This makes for a seamless transition without all those loose ends!
- use BLSC for regular stitches and MosaicFLDC indicated with an X in the pattern to bring the color over one row.
- at the beginning and end of your work, you add a SC when working in a row
- You can repeat the pattern over and over in a row to create larger projects such as pillows or blankets
This Winter Headband Mosaic Crochet Pattern has a repeat of 12. When you look at the pattern, column 1 shows you what alternating color you are using in each row. You are only using 1 color for each row for both the red and white squares. These are blsc. The squares with an x are mosaicfldc. The pattern itself starts on column 3 all the way across.
For this headband, you will repeat this pattern of 12 seven times. So it gives you a total of 84 stitches.
Here is the written pattern, but you can also just follow the chart above.
Foundation: with A 84 FDC, slst to start pulling up color B
Round 1: ch1, sc in same ch, blsc around, slst to start pulling up color A
Round 2: ch1, sc in same ch, *MosaicFLDC in next st (this is the one marked with an X in the pattern) blsc in the next 10 sts, rep from* around, slst to start pulling up color B

Round 4: rep round 2

Round 12: rep round 10
Round 13: ch1, reverse slst around, slst to start
Now you just have to add the little red band that goes around the part of the headband where the yarn change happens and scrunches the band a bit together . You can wear this part on the front, the side, or in the back like I did 🙂
Row 1: ch6, dc into 2nd ch from hook, dc across, turn
Row 2-5: ch2, dc across, turn
Row 6: ch2, dc across, fasten off, wrap red band around headband and whip stitch 2 ends together, weave in all ends
